INS Vagsheer

Features

  • It is the last of the Scorpene class submarines made under the P75 project.
  • It was designed by French naval defense and energy company DCNS and manufactured by Mazagon Dock Limited.
  • Vagsheer is a diesel attack Scorpene class submarine.
  • It can do offensive operations across the spectrum of naval warfare including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.
  • It is enabled with a C303 anti-torpedo counter-measure system.
  • It can carry up to 18 torpedoes.
  • Its superior stealth features include advanced acoustic absorption techniques, low radiated noise levels, and hydro-dynamically optimized shape.
  • It has the ability to launch precision guided weapons, underwater or on surface.
  • It will be equipped with state-of-the-art, air independent propulsion systems which will enable them to stay underwater for longer periods of time, enhancing their combat capabilities and providing the Navy with added underwater firepower.

  • Vagsheer is named after the sand fish, a deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean.
  • Vagsheer can take up to eight officers and 35 men.
  • It is 67.5 meters long and 12.3 meters high.
  • Vagsheer can reach top speed of 20 knots when submerged and a top speed of 11 knots when it surfaces.
  • It has four diesel engines, battery cells for power, and a silent Permanently Magnetized Propulsion Motor.
  • The hull, fin and hydroplanes are designed for minimum underwater resistance.
  • All equipment inside the pressure hull is mounted on shock-absorbing cradles for enhanced stealth.

Facts

Previously, the submarine from Russia of the same name as Vagsheer, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on December 26, 1974, and was decommissioned on April 30, 1997.

About the project

  • In 1997, the Ministry of Defense approved a plan to acquire 24 submarines under Project 75.
  • After the Kargil War in 1999, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved a 30-year submarine building plan that included the construction of 24 submarines indigenously by 2030.
  • Out of 24 submarines to be built in India, 18 will be conventional submarines and 6 will be nuclear-powered submarines.
  • P 75 is one of two lines of submarines, the other being P75I, as part of a plan approved in 1999 for indigenous submarine construction with technology taken from overseas firms.
  • The older Project 75 was brought under the new plan, with the two production lines to be built under Project 75 and Project 75I using transfer of technology from different foreign manufacturers.
  • The contract for six submarines under P75 was given to Mazagon dock Shipbuilders Limited in 2005.
  • The Project 75 (India)-class submarines, or P-75I is a follow-on of the P-75 class submarines of the Indian Navy.
  • Under this project, the Indian Navy intends to acquire six conventional, diesel-electric attack submarines, which will also feature advanced capabilities - including air-independent propulsion (AIP), ISR, special operations forces (SOF), anti-ship warfare (AShW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), land-attack capabilities and other features.
  • All six submarines are expected to be constructed in India, under the Make in India initiative.
